We are starting to use CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs more in our home. Actually the energy savings is secondary to me; I like the fact that I don't have to drag out the 6-foot ladder every few months to change the bulbs in the kitchen ceiling fixture much more! But when CFL bulbs burn out, because of the mercury in them, you can't just toss them in the trash. So what to do? Home Depot will take them for free! While most places charge a fee (negating some of your electric bill savings), Home Depot does not. We don't have a Home Depot in our town, so I just hold onto the burned-out bulbs and take them the next time we'll be near one. You can also check with your town to see if they will take them at the annual hazardous waste collection.
